xx A fuel cost calculator
« Thread started on: Jul 14th, 2004, 6:44pm »

The American Automobile Association (AAA) has a Web page
that estimates how much it costs to drive from one city to the next.

Enter your starting city, destination and your car's year, make and
model. If your make and model isn't listed, you can enter your car's
average miles per gallon.

The distance, fuel consumption and price of fuel are estimated.
It can't give an exact number but it's great to use for a budget.

Cool - that was just about exactly what we spent

one way in our old Saturn to Orlando = $50, they say $51

and $30 round trip Pittsburgh/Detroit - they say $31.

Great site - thanks! smiley

Well, with the Windstar here are the results:

Start City: VA, Richmond
End City: FL, Orlando

One-Way Trip: 735 Miles
31.96 Gallons Used
$58.99 Fuel Cost

Round-Trip: 1470 Miles
63.92 Gallons Used
$117.98 Fuel Cost

And with my Explorer:

Start City: VA, Richmond
End City: FL, Orlando

One-Way Trip: 735 Miles
38.68 Gallons Used
$71.40 Fuel Cost

Round-Trip: 1470 Miles
77.36 Gallons Used
$142.80 Fuel Cost

Either way you calculate it - it's less than one round trip airline ticket down for us!

Neat site!

In our Nissan Quest.
Start City: OR, Eugene
End City: FL, Orlando

One-Way Trip: 3152 Miles
137.04 Gallons Used
$266.02 Fuel Cost

Round-Trip: 6304 Miles
274.08 Gallons Used
$532.04 Fuel Cost

Much cheaper than flying, but I don't know if spending 4 days each way in the car is worth it! grin

Results

Start City: TX, Dallas
End City: FL, Orlando

One-Way Trip: 1129 Miles
45.16 Gallons Used
$83.51 Fuel Cost

Round-Trip: 2258 Miles
90.32 Gallons Used
$167.02 Fuel Cost

A little less than the cost of a round trip airline ticket, unless I find a fare sale, but look at the amount of time saved. Averaging 60 mph that's nearly 38 hours driving roundtrip. It's a 2 and a half hour flight each way. I think I'll fly.

This is really great! I totally thought the Town & Country would be way more than the Saturn, but, it turns out it is only about $20 more for a round trip. Granted, we may be able to fly for less than $100 more for the two of us--feel better about flying all the time!!!

So that was then:

And this is now! shocked

$71.03 Fuel Cost

Round-Trip: 1470 Miles

So tack on +/- $125/night for two nights ($250 total) at a hotel splitting the drive down and back, plus added meals for two extra driving days and it is costing us much less to fly with the airfare bargain I just nabbed! User Image

This kinda proves what I've been thinking to myself, though. I've been hearing on the news about how people are going to cancel vacations because of the increase in gas prices and how it is going to make trips too expensive.

Is $25 on the round trip going to stop that many people? Just wondering about every one else's thoughts...

For vacations? Nah, I don't think so - but it helped me make the decision that much easier to fly when I found a great airfare. It's a very physcological thing, but I would hope most people would recognize this really as a small added cost of their vacation budget.

We are driving to LA/San Diego this summer. Not only has the price increase not stopped us, but we are now taking a larger car that doesn't get as good as gas milage as our van.

I just figured out that the new car will save us almost $40 on gas round trip and I'm praying that the cost will continue to go down as well.

This is cool. If gas prices stay about what they are (I can dream), gas would be about $100.00 less than I anticipated for our Dec. trip. Now we just watch the prices fluctuate and hope they land at about where they currently are. tongue

When we started planning this trip to Orlando, the fuel calculator estimated 185.00 RT in the Matrix. It's now 222.00 since June. I know it's not a ton of money, but still it's a good increase.

Here are the estimated costs for this trip:

Results

Start City: MD, Ocean City
End City: FL, Orlando

One-Way Trip: 895 Miles
38.91 Gallons Used
$112.39 Fuel Cost

Round-Trip: 1790 Miles
77.82 Gallons Used
$224.78 Fuel Cost

I used Ocean City as it's the closest to my starting point, eventhough it's about 30 miles each way further than we have to drive.

Our last trip (Dec. 2005) I think the fuel cost was closer to $175. Oh well, it's still cheaper than 3 round trip airline tickets. I never could find anything less than $1500 and that's with us have to drive to Baltimore or Philly.
