xx MagicBands & FP+
« Thread started on: Oct 17th, 2013, 08:57am »

We received our MagicBands this morning after choosing our colors and adding FP+ for some of our park days on Tuesday evening. Very fast delivery, Disney. I'm not sure how I will like FP+ since we are not super planners. Our park days are usually determined by any ADR's I have made. I did make a few calls to the technical support team for some help and they were very patient with me. I will let you know how we like the system after we return home. We'll be there from Oct. 29-Nov. 7.

Looking forward to hear how you like them. Our park planning is similar to yours; just ADRs for the most part.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts. We ended up really loving them. We used TouringPlans.com to choose which park we'd visit on which day to avoid crowds and that worked quite well. We also had created personalized and optimized touring plans for most of our park days. We chose our FP+ for afternoon and evening each day, because we're typically in the parks for rope drop and there's no real need of FP early in the day.

FP+ was fantastic for character meets. We did the Mickey Mouse Town Square meet and also the Rapunzel/Snow White Fairytale Hall meet. We only did one character meal this trip (Tusker House for lunch) so wanted to meet characters we wouldn't see there, plus I wanted to check out the new Princess Fairytale Hall for myself. My fellas humor me. wink

By and large, the stage shows are a bad use of FP+, at least during slower times of the year. In most cases you don't get a reserved seating area, and the FP+ and Standby queues merge early on. We used FP+ at Lights, Motors, Action, and Festival of the Lion King. At LMA, it was useless. There was NO advantage whatsoever, particularly since the return window is VERY close to when the show begins, so the seats closest to the stage are taken before you can even check in. So while we didn't wait in line, we walked up a bazillion stairs in scorching heat to find 4 seats together way at the back of the amphitheater. At FOTLK, though, we were admitted to the theater to find seats ahead of the standby queue, so that was great. Our observation of the procedure at the other shows was that they worked like LMA. At Indy the queues merged after only 6 feet or so. A waste in off-peak seasons. Same for Nemo.

As the former "keeper of KTTW and paper FPs" I LOVED the convenience of having our Room Keys, tickets and FP+ stored on our Magic Bands. No searching through my purse dozens of times each day to find those things.

We have 3 more days, but, so far, we have had no trouble with the MagicBands. They are very convenient for park entry, room entry and charging to the room. We feel somewhat limited with the FP+ feature. And this is quite strange. Yesterday we did Enchanted Tales with Belle and DH was a participant. A PP photographer took pictures of all the participants and gave them each a PP card. Then we did Ariel's Grotto and the PP photographer scanned my band. When we went to view the pictures, there were 2 pictures of us from Buzz Lightyear along with the Belle and Ariel shots. We do not know how this is possible. We rode standby and did not even view those shots. Very strange, kind of a Big Brother feeling.

Elaine,

I wonder if they are doing facial recognition, because they had just introduced that the last time I sailed DCL?

Big Brother IS watching you- There are things about this- that I dont like at all- and that is all I will say about that- It may be the end of us going except maybe every three or four years- and at that we may NOT do only parks when we go-Not bitter- but also will not in our situation OVER PLAN anything-cant and wont even do so- because it just adds extra stress..

Initially I was not very excited about this... but I will admit I am now more intrigued. I have ordered our "colors," and I have played around a bit on the My Disney Experience site. I am still too far out to book FP+, but I think it may be good for some of the more popular attractions. We shall see...

The Magic Bands have both long range and short range RFID capabilities, as well as geotagging capabilities. They are identical to the bands used in the Oceaneer Club/Lab on the Magic- and when I'd go to pick up the boys from them a few weeks ago, the CM would tell me "Matthew is in the Avengers Academy, and Xander is in Mickey Mouse Club".

The Memory Maker product that replaced Photopass/Photopass+ will use that geotagging technology to capture random photo and video of you when you aren't aware of it. Maybe during parades and fireworks? Maybe during rides? We don't know much about how it's going to work yet and where they will be catching this spontaneous action.

I think we're going to see customized marketing come into play at some point. If my MB alerts WDW that I've just exited Spaceship Earth and I have an ADR for Coral Reef in 2 hours- why not send me a personalized coupon for MouseGears if I spend $50 within the next hour?

The implication this has for parents and children who become separated is very exciting, though- and could save a lot of families some extremely stressful moments.

I can't wait to see how it all shakes out. I don't necessarily think the 3 FP+ a day in tiers that we have today is what we'll still have in 2 years.... going to be very interesting!
